Storm Drain Marking Program
What You Can Do To Clean Up Storm Water:
- Allow nothing to enter the storm drain that you wouldn't drink or swim in.
- Reduce or eliminate the use of fertilizers and pesticides in lawns and gardens. Learn to appreciate the magnificent colors of spring.
- Start a compost pile and compost garden and lawn trimmings rather than bagging and disposing of them. It's a free and non-toxic fertilizer.
- Wash your car on an porous surface like the lawn rather than the impervious driveway.
- Recycle leftover paints, used motor oil, and other hazardous materials at a local Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. Contact your local Solid Waste Management District office for exact dates and locations.
- Place cigarette butts and other trash in les.
- Remove pet wastes before they enter the storm drains.
- Report illegal dumping to your local service department, police or fire department, or the sheriff. Or call the Ohio EPA Hotline at 1-800-686-6330.
- Speak out and get involved by urging public officials to adopt wetland protection, stream corridor protection, and construction site runoff ordinances.
- Encourage others to become stewards of our valuable waterways.
- Educate your local public officials about the water quality issues that concern you and your neighbors.
- Join a local watershed group or start one of your own.
